Medical Setback

Arun Patil
Arun Patil was supposed to be discharged from hospital on Wednesday (ref post of May 5). On Tuesday evening he was informed that he would have to urgently undergo another surgery to contain the infection on his diabetic foot. On Wednesday evening, while on the operating table, the surgeon discovered that gangrene had spread so badly that purification had not only eaten through the flesh but set deep into the bones and there was nothing he could do now to save the foot.
The surgery was abandoned and Arun asked for a second opinion.
Shekhawat updates members on Arun Patil's condition
He called for his doctor friend, a diabetologist who had been treating him for years and yesterday afternoon, he confirmed the worst. The foot will have to be amputated at the earliest.
Breaking this news in the morning, Shekhawat urged everyone to pray for Arun so that he is able to save his foot and recover from the trauma. “He is all alone in the hospital since last Friday and from what I understand, there is no one from his family or friends even inquiring on him. Tomorrow morning, soon after the exercises, some of us from the Club will pay him a visit to extend our moral support,” he said.
Members have also been told that should they like to send Arun some home-cooked food, they may bring the “tiffin carrier” in the morning.

However, they must desist from packing anything sweet (including fruits) and preferably include food items having an extended shelf life.
As things stand, Arun is in for the long haul. The report from Hinduja Hospital on the “culture test” (not biopsy, as earlier reported) has established that the foot infection is so advanced and acute that it has become immune to antibiotics. In the absence of any medication, the only option left now is to remove the infected parts, lest they develop into a life-threatening condition. The tricky issue is to wait till such time the swelling in the foot subsides and the area dries up a little – or else, sutures after the amputation will not hold.
The story does not end here. Arun's real ordeal begins after he leaves the hospital. For one who leads a bachelor's life and has to fend for himself on everything, this is no ordinary challenge.
