Jagmohan Papneja reads out terms and conditions of MOU

Bijoy Gupta puts his signature to MOU... and cooks his goose

Hari Singh Shekhawat did it this morning. In a well-orchestrated move, he put in his papers from the post of Chairman (Emeritus) of the Club, making way for his long-time friend, Bijoy Kumar Gupta to assume charge against a consideration of Rs100,000 – payable in cash or cheque to Big Laaf.
Reading from a Memorandum of Understanding to this effect, Secretary Jagmohan Papneja announced that the new arrangement “shall come into force on condition of and with immediate effect upon the realization of the said cheque of Rs100,000” in favour of Big Laaf. He added that Shekhawat had declared he was stepping down on his “own free will and volition” and was under no compulsion to do so. The MOU, countersigned by Papneja and President Srichand Arora as two witnesses, was also endorsed by Gupta.
Whether or not an ‘affidavit’ of this nature holds any legal sanctity, it was enough to propel Gupta to the seventh heaven. As followers of this blog would have noted, it has been his long-cherished dream to be a bossman of Big Laaf, just that (in his perception) Shekhawat posed a major stumbling block in his road to success. In fact, he could never imagine that Shekhawat would easily surrender “his decade-old hegemony over the Club” and in that context, had offered to buy him out for one lakh rupees.
Much of this has been fuelled by jealousy, which surprisingly, Gupta does not deny. He admits to being envious of the popularity Shekhawat enjoys with men and women alike, that he can get away even with blue murder, all because of the post he holds in the Club. “I too want to be treated special, like a hero and do what I please with no questions asked,” he cribbed like a child. Out of sympathy, Shekhawat decided to humour him.
Now that he has got what he wants, it remains to be seen whether Gupta keeps his part of the deal. Time will tell.

Today I saw one of the most exciting deals in the club wherein the buyer, Mr Gupta was made to believe he got the best of it. In fact, this is like a pseudo assurance. Anxiously awaiting the outcome.

Hope he lives up to the expectations.
