Today was supposed to be Mallika Kagzi’s birthday and many in the Club were on fast (or so they claimed) since last night. After all, she is the one to lavish us with sumptuous eats every other day for no rhyme or reason. So on her birthday, the celebrations were expected to be GRAND. Starving was just another way of making room in the stomach and verily, a selfish sacrifice.
But whoever expected Zarina Khan to crop up (after more than a month) on this very day loaded with chocolate bars all the way from Qatar?

If that was not enough, there was Prabha Kapoor offering a huge steel container of creamy crackers – well, for no particular reason. Then there was Yusuf Rassiwala with another big box of chocolates and this had to be the icing on the cake: His grand-daughter got an acting break yesterday in a television serial, Ek Tha Raja, Ek Thi Rani. Coincidentally, it was also her birthday yesterday.
Yet, these were the hors d’oeuvres if you like. The main course began with yet another round of chocolate bars, courtesy Mallika.

Her family, including son and daughter-in-law, had turned up in the Garden towards the end of the exercises “to give her a surprise”. Amid the cheers, greetings and rousing ovation, Bihari Milwani did the honors of presenting her with the Club calendar (and a personal coffee mug), soon to be followed by the cake cutting ceremony. Even before everyone could get a bite, the plates were ready and out came the famous ‘Mallika Special’ we were waiting for – piping hot mutton keema, potato curry (for the vegans) and of course, pao. What more could anyone ask for breakfast on a Saturday morning in the Garden? And still there was tea to wash it all down… At times like this, we can only wonder what good we have done to deserve so much of goodness and selfless love embodied in Mallika Kagzi. May she have the very best in life.
