The Bose couple -- with Maitra's gift

On July 3 every year, nature unfailingly reminds the Boses – Bhaswati and Derek – of the ‘monsoon wedding’ that sealed their fate 15 years ago. But today things were devastatingly different.

Much ado over a rose

It did not rain. It was plain havoc since early morning – a relentless downpour that paralysed the city, uprooting countless trees and bringing down a railway bridge nearby.
Shekhawat had given up on the exercises, wondering if anyone would turn up in such hostile weather conditions.

But when he was told about the anniversary

celebration slated for the day, his face lit up. Sure enough, people trooped in one by one – Khatoon Baig, Nahid Khan, Siba Prasad Maitra, Banoo Apa, Kajal and Dilip Babani, Bihari Milwani, Geeta Latte… all soaked to the skin.

treacherous potholes and swirling muck? Nothing, but plain LOVE. And this was in ample evidence all morning – be it in the beautiful hand-crafted memento Bihari painstakingly creates, the special blessings/ prayers for the Bose couple from Khatoon Baig and Banoo Apa, even in the many thoughtful gifts… all from the heart. Siba Prasad Maitra had come up with an innovative idea – a candid picture

of the couple, individually signed by everyone present. Absolutely priceless!
Maitra also brought a rose. But at the time of presenting, it vanished into thin air. There was no trace of it anywhere. After a frantic search, Maitra zeroed in on the culprit – Shekhawat. He was the only one to be grinning from ear to ear and had hidden the prickly stalk under his T-shirt. The best part was that he insisted on being rewarded for this extraordinary feat and be the one to present the rose. Maitra relented.
Such moments can never be revisited. They happened once and remain embedded in our collective memory to be cherished for ever. For all those who could not be part of this celebration, here are some pictures that seek to capture the spirit of the occasion.
