Celebration

An unusual ‘drought’ in an otherwise busy birthday month was today broken by Harbans Kaur. She celebrated her daughter’s birthday with a big blackforest cake, much to everyone’s surprise. We were all conditioned to being denied of any morning treat, at least till Ramzaan is over. As most of our Muslim members are away, it looked like the dry spell would continue for some more time. Harbans Kaur proved us wrong and that there is still room for hope. The best part though, was that her knee surgery in Ludhiana has done wonders for the lady. Gone are the days when she would come limping into the Garden, stopping every few steps and seeking support whenever she sat down or stood up. She was visibly in agony even as she did not utter a word to obtain anyone’s sympathy. Today, she is the same proud person, but a new Harbans Kaur. She walked in with confident strides, a spring in every step and most important, with an upbeat disposition. We all felt happy for her.
This is not to belittle the importance of her daughter’s birthday. We wish her also the very best on the occasion and thank her for remembering us. Had she turned up with her mother, it would have been the absolute icing on the cake!
Harish Wadhwa:
