Monday Buzz

For a Monday morning, the turnout was good. Shekhawat described it as “two dozen plus two” – one dozen for the men present and the other dozen for the women, plus two late-comers who habitually show up at the end of the exercises.
But that was not what dominated the morning buzz. A cricket pitch is coming up in the Garden close to where we exercise. The stretch of land adjoining the nullah has been dug up. Today we saw a yellow road roller standing there motionless. And thereby hangs a tale.
We were told that the road roller (pic right) had been requisitioned for leveling the ground, but not much progress could be made because of intermittent rains. Yesterday, given favorable weather conditions, somebody decided to operate the road roller – only to discover that its battery was missing. Somebody had apparently stolen the battery!
An emergency meeting was called last evening to investigate the theft. And unable to pin the blame on anyone, the administrators of the Garden have resolved to penalise the night watchman. A sum of Rs5,000 will be deducted from the poor man’s salary.
Many questions are making the rounds. Who is to say the battery was stolen at night? Was it stolen in the first place? Does not the punishment smack of arbitrariness? Why make the night watchman a scapegoat? Is this because he happens to be a soft target…
