Of the seven replies he received, perhaps the wittiest and most matter-of-fact reply came from his wife, Banoo Apa: “Because diabetes does not make any noise. I know many people suffering from diabetes but honestly, I have not heard its sound!”
Jesting apart, Banoo Apa was not far from the truth because most of us are not even aware of the advent of diabetes or the fact we could be living with it. As Dr Farooq put it: “Whether it is blurred vision, weakness, disorientation, heart stroke or the collapse of some other vital organ, all of this can be traced to diabetes. Explaining the different types of diabetes, Dr Farooq pointed out that the symptoms are easy to detect, but there is no cure. “Please remember that diabetes is not a disease,

Elaborating on how the body requires food to draw its energy and the role of insulin produced by our pancreas in this regard, the good doc pointed out that even the sugar we consume these days is routinely contaminated by as many as 32 chemicals: “All of this gets into our bloodstream and impairs the functioning of the pancreas. Eventually we land up with diabetes.”
The talk is to be continued over the next two sessions with Dr Farooq taking up questions from the audience in the end.
