Whoever imagined that the desk calendar given away gratis on birthdays (see post of April 10) can mean so much to our members as to turn them uncontrollably emotional? Karuna Waghmare even burst out in tears this morning over the calendar gifted to Shanti Singh yesterday.
That she was upset became amply evident when she walked in briskly into the Garden today, well ahead of her normal time and minus her walking stick.

Shekhawat is unwell

“Don’t talk to me, anybody,” she instructed, taking her position between Nahid Khan and Nasir Putani Shah. “I am katti with everybody.”
Nobody took her seriously till Nahid was seen in conversation with Karuna. “What is happening?” snapped Arun Patil. “Everybody keep quiet!”
“She wants to know why her picture was missing in yesterday’s calendar,” Nahid informed.
“Arrey, it was Shanti Singh’s calendar,” Arun replied and carried on with the exercises.
Before long, Santosh Tyagi cut across the exercise circle and hugged Karuna while Nahid hovered around. “She’s weeping,” Santosh explained.
“Stop this drama,” Arun ordered.

“Only if she comes will she be photographed!”
That was when Karuna broke down. “I come almost every day and still in none of the 12 pages of the calendar, there is a single picture of mine. Everybody else is there. What is my fault?” she exclaimed.
This was as sad as much as it was funny and the exercises came to a halt. Rukhsana Khan, Shanti Singh and other ladies huddled around Karuna, trying to comfort her. She had turned inconsolable. It took several minutes to convince her that every calendar is one of its kind and surely on her birthday, she will get a calendar with her picture on every page.
“Somebody please click her picture now,” Santosh said, still holding Karuna tightly. “She thinks only one calendar is issued in the whole year.” Karuna turned her face away, grumbling: “But my birthday is at the end of the year, in October. What is the use of such a calendar?”
Meanwhile, news comes in of Shekhawat undergoing a series of medical tests as doctors suspect some infection/ malfunction in his urinary bladder. Bijoy Gupta attributes this to overeating at a party he had attended with Shekhawat last Saturday. Shekhawat does not refute this. For the moment though, he is keeping his fingers crossed.

Karuna's bickering is to be taken with a pinch of salt. It is too bad that her birthday falls in October. However, this keeps the interest of Club members intact. They have to keep waiting for the grand celebrations. Good show, keep laughing.
